Blessing or Curse

I just got back from a great trip to Denver. I went to visit my best friend from college, Lindy. We went hiking, met up with her family and friends, and I got to meet her niece, who, I had been hearing stories and seeing pictures of for the last year. (You can see her pulling my hair in the group photo when we all went to the zoo. Too cute!)

I also was able to catch up with another college friend, Joe. He is also in the broadcast industry, working in Seattle. He was visiting a friend in Denver this past weekend as well, so we all met up one night. I haven’t been able to see Joe since I graduated in 2012. Needless to say, it was a BIG reunion. Can you tell by our BIG smiles?

I felt refreshed coming back from my trip, ready to go back to work. But, when I turned my key to start my car heading to the grocery store to get everything I needed for the next week, I was unpleasantly surprised to some rattling sounds. The engine would not start. ‘Great,’ I thought, ‘just what I need now.’ Cursed.

While outside, my neighbor stopped me. I had met her husband, but hadn’t been able to meet her yet. They just had a baby and she was taking it for a walk. We had a pleasant conversation before she continued on.

Thirty minutes later, when my friendly neighbor was making her way back, she saw the tow-truck and me outside. She stopped and offered any assistance. “Do you need food? Do you need a ride somewhere? Let me know if you need anything tomorrow, I can take you wherever you need to go,” she said. Blessed.

The entire next day I spent waiting for my car to be fixed. There were a number of different tests and repairs that needed to be completed. Definitely something I didn’t need to be bothered with. I already had a load of things I wanted to complete coming back from my trip. However, I couldn’t help but feel warm inside by my neighbor. Our caring conversation and her generous offer was such a gift.

Life always seems to throw us with the unexpected. I could easily choose to be upset now that my day is being wasted away dealing with a task that wasn’t on my original to-do list. However, I can’t help but smile thinking about the kind-hearted woman that is my neighbor.

We get to choose how we see the world. I choose to see the good. It’s not always easy, and sometimes you have to search long and hard to find your blessings, but they are always there.

It’s like what the tow-truck driver said to me before he left, “God works in mysterious ways.”
