I started explaining to my soon to be roommate my job description, which is not so atypical these days. “Well, I just resigned as a TV news reporter. I am going to freelance making video content for an online health and wellness website, begin bolstering my attention towards my blog and get a steady side job,” I told her.
She could have judged me for not having the normal nine to five; instead she friendly responded with, “A lot of my friends in my church group are starting to question the jobs they are currently in.”
In your 20’s I think there is a lot of exploration that happens. The previous two decades have been spent in a classroom and you are told you must be there. Then, you graduate. Suddenly there are no rules to life. Sure, there are social pressures and you will have people around you telling you what you “should” do, but really YOU get to choose. That’s empowering and frightening all at the same time.
My friend, Sarah, often shares stories of her small yet very spunky boss. From what I am told she is a doctor with one heck of a worth ethic. Sarah also has an incredible work ethic, so if she’s blown away by this woman’s determination, this doctor must be A-MAZ-ING! Sarah said Dr. Amazing, as I will now call her, took Sarah and her team to lunch the other week. For the first time, Sarah said she learned about Dr. Amazing beyond her office habits. Dr. Amazing explained that in her 20’s her dream was to be the best stay-at-home mom. She was going to have four kids with the “picture perfect” life. Now flash forward to today. She’s working hard at a killer job at Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati, with two kids and balancing it all – it’s perfect, but not the perfect she’d imagined.
My mother’s generation was the type to graduate from school, get a job and stay in it forever. Today our culture is much more open to exploration. So embrace it! Are you dissatisfied with how you are spending your days? Maybe you just want to pick up a guitar and play. DO IT! Don’t be afraid to explore. There is no age discrimination. I have found myself right in the middle of that process – and if I am lucky maybe I, and you too if you give it a try, can be Dr. Amazing in our own field. The perfect life starts by creating it.
