There were certain philosophies I was taught growing up by my mother. I call them Carolisms. Yes, my mother’s name is Carol… I am pretty creative. Carolism 35: Who your friends are says a great deal about who you are.

When I was going to college in Spokane, Washington, one of my friends often used the phrase “Ruh-row” when something went wrong. I remember mentoring one day when another student in the program told me she forgot to pack the snacks. “Ruh-row,” I replied. Suddenly the phrase became part of my everyday vernacular.

Living in Wichita Falls, Texas, I spent hours upon hours in the gym. I’d always loved fitness but my best friend liked it even more, so when she invited me to accompany her on her extended workouts I’d gladly accept - kicking my normal fitness routine up a notch.

It’s only natural that you will take on some characteristics of the people you put yourself around. So my advice is to choose wisely. If you admire qualities about someone, get to know them and you too will acquire those traits.

Today I have a diverse group of friends. Some work in the fitness world and other are in corporate America. Some are super shy and others are tech geniuses, so they often find themselves helping me when I run into issues. Thanks guys! All my friends share something in common. They are driven, strong individuals who have a passion to do good. It’s exactly what I hope to do, which is why I keep them around.
