Know Yourself To Sell Yourself

I’d say I am a highly reflective person. I take time to think about what I am doing and how I am doing it. Writing the blog definitely helps. Over the past two weeks my time reflecting has been turned up close to the maximum volume level as I have been applying for various jobs and have been interviewed.
I spent some time working at Nordstrom. I found great joy in assisting customers to buy merchandise. I mean, what college girl doesn’t want people asking them her opinion on style and clothing. Nordstrom does a great job to teach its sale associates how to be successful. One of the most basic lessons - know the product, the better you can sell it. Perhaps a customer is on the fence about purchasing a pair of running shorts, but after I explain to them about the key pocket, compartment for an iPod, and the wind resistant material the shorts are made of the customer can’t run to the register fast enough.
This same concept applies when you are looking for a job. Before you try to sell yourself to a company get to know yourself. Reflection is key. Can you answer the question, “Who am I?” Figure out what you want and what you are willing to do to get it.
Don’t forget to reflect upon the company too. Nordstrom lesson number two - learn three things about the customer. If I know Sally is going to go on a beach trip soon, I might direct her to the hat section or show her a bathing suit and cover-up. If you know a company is passionate about community then you should share with them experiences you have had in the community, whether that’s through service or demonstrating a deep understanding of that community.
Answering the question “Who am I,” is not an easy thing to do. It takes a lot of work. Work that’s worth it though, when you have a deep understanding of self while working for a company you love.
