During my first broadcast internship in college, I found myself analyzing bios of different on air journalist on various TV station websites across the country. Occasionally I would email the people I felt I would connect with to see if they had any tips for me as I was looking to go into the industry.
Fast forward four years later to today and I am still doing the same type of thing - it’s just not exclusive to people in broadcast. My recent connection came today. It began when I saw Oprah wish someone happy birthday via twitter. The message was to a guy named Sean Martinelli. Some quick internet stalking led me to find Sean was a broadcast journalism student at Syracuse in his senior year. He considers himself a product of great television, he loves the Oprah Show and is an acquaintance of the daytime talk show star.

I knew you didn’t believe me so I had to show proof. Sean also enjoys the CBS Sunday Morning. After my research I quickly became interested in learning more about Sean as it seemed as if the same things led us to walk similar, if not the same, career paths. I fired off an email to him hoping I’d get a response.
Today we talked on the phone for about an phone. We held a fluid conversation the entire time. Despite him being a few years younger than me, I was able to learn so much from his story. He’s such a wise guy. In return I was able to help him navigate his next steps as I was in his shoes not to long ago.
A few hours after our phone call I jumped on one of my favorite sites. I read this article where I found the secret to life, A.K.A true happiness . (A drum roll is need for this.)

True happiness is found out of social interactions and making connections. No wonder I had such a wonderful feeling inside after my conversation with my new friend.
What are you doing to connect with others? It all starts by reaching out. You have to make the effort like I did with Sean. The reward will be there. Don't trust me, trust the science.
