Searching for Love

All day I have been looking forward to one thing many despise. The premiere of this season’s “The Bachelor.” Yes, the show is a little ridiculous. According to my unscientific calculations the program has an 8.9% success rate for people to actually find their ‘soul mate’ and stay together.

I used to be a complete hater of the program. I never watched and instead, ridiculed it. Anyone can ‘fall in love’ when you are traveling around the world going on extravagant dates. Personally I think love is when you find someone you can have fun with doing daily tasks, like grocery shopping, and I have yet to see “The Bachelor” take someone through the produce section.

I started watching the show in college. A big group of girls would get together every Monday night. I would mostly just yell at the TV as the contestants proclaimed just how much they were ‘in love.’ Soon though, it became something I looked forward to. My sister and mom eventually fell into “The Bachelor” vortex too, and it became a good talking point, something to have in common, as we all lived far apart.

It’s now season 19 of the show. I find it fascinating in an age where TV struggles for viewership the show can take up three hours of prime time television. If that doesn’t demonstrate success, I don’t know what does.

So how can a show that’s so unsuccessful with it’s mission, for people to find ‘the one,’ be so successful? I have a theory.

“The Bachelor” follows the search of what we all want in life. Musicians sing about it and authors write stories about it. Everyone is looking for that one person to share their lives with. We all do crazy things for it too. I know I’ve flown across the country for a chance at love. Today, people use online dating and apps like Tinder to randomly meet people hoping for that missing thing in their lives. So is it THAT crazy to think people would go on a TV show to find love? All those people want is what you want, and they shouldn’t be mocked for that.

As for this season, I have the spoiler report. Chris Soules and I end up together.

(Just kidding, I did meet him at the Tournament of Roses Parade though, and I think we look pretty good together.)
