The other day while flipping through the channels on TV searching for a relaxing evening on my couch I found one of my favorites on, “Hitch.”

If you are unfamiliar with the movie, it’s a romantic comedy, where Will Smith plays a consultant helping out guys, who may not be as smooth as others, to get the girls of their dreams. This film is one of my favorites because throughout the movie it’s revealed that it’s not the suave behaviors Will Smith’s character teaches the guys that gets them the girls, but it’s their, what I like to call “corks.”

All of us have characteristics that make us, us. For example when I am cold I will start shaking my muscles to try to get them to warm up and a “Zzzzzzzz” sound ends up coming out of my mouth. I am not sure when or how I acquired this action, but its been going on for years now. (Scientific testing is still being done to see if this does in fact make you warmer.)

In “Hitch,” usually these unique personality traits come out when things go wrong. When the night becomes unscripted, the character’s true selves are revealed. My question is why are we hiding who we are in the first place? Why not embrace who we are? I believe it’s our differences that make this world beautiful.

In 4th grade I remember doing a classroom exercise discussing the ocean’s ecosystem. All of us represented different animals. We stood in a circle and with a rope we created a web, each one of us holding part of the rope. The teacher selected one person and told them to pull their end of the rope. Then, she told us if you felt the tug of the rope to pull it yourself. Within two or three more tugs the entire class was feeling the pull. This exercise demonstrated how the ecosystem needs every animal. All different animals, playing different roles, but all were needed.

This world needs each and every one of us and all our corky behaviors. Think about it in an economic standpoint. We can’t all be tax accountants. The world needs musicians, therapists, and party planners. Embrace who you are, and your love will find you. Hitch had to fall off of a car to realize this, you’re realization though, doesn’t have to be as painful.
