Let's Talk Money

I have an untraditional work schedule and I also have an untraditional payday. I love paydays, and today is the day. I am not really sure why I have a love for the day. I use direct deposit so it’s not like I am running a check to the bank or taking money showers. Mind you, I work as a journalist, so even if I did have a money shower, it would run out quickly.

I think I like paydays because it’s a reminder for me to check in with my finances (remember I am pretty A-type). Just as I like to keep my body and mind fit, I enjoy staying financially fit. My last job I was making roughly $11 per hour, and that’s after a college education, so saving wasn’t something I could do a lot of. Now, I make a little more and I have been saving roughly 30 percent of my earnings.

I am no financial guru but I can do the simple math of balancing a checkbook. My parents always preached to never spend what you don’t have. In an age where plastic is used in almost every purchase though, I can see how easy it is to lose track.

That is why I started logging what I spend. Every time I swipe my credit card, I use the notepad on my phone to keep track. This way I can see my spending at any point throughout the month. With everything online it’s really not necessary to implement a system like this but it’s worked for me.

I also have a Mint account. It’s a great way to create a budget and track your spending each month.

I am shocked with how many people live in debt. I couldn’t imagine it. The stress would make me so overwhelmed knowing I owe someone so much money. I mean, I stress myself out knowing I owe someone ten dollars for a meal. I think too many people get caught up in the big stuff, especially when you have so many different bills and responsibilities. Money can be complicated. I get it. But, if you start with the basics, like making sure you don’t go into the red, you’ll be on your way to success. And it all starts with a plan.
