Sending Gratitude

Call me old fashion but I love a good thank you note. No, not an email with the subject line saying “Thank you,” I’m talking about a handwritten letter that has a stamp on it from our United States Postal Service. Maybe it’s because my mother wouldn’t let my sister and I have our Christmas and birthday presents until we had written such thank you notes. Whatever it is I simply adore them.

Needless to say when I opened this note at work, I grinned just as I am in the picture there. Gratitude is one of the best gifts you can give. First, it’s free! Secondly everyone likes to feel appreciated. A thank you note says you appreciate someone enough to take time out of your day to sit down and write a few lines of gratitude. In today’s world, this act even means more as the art of handwriting becomes more obsolete with keyboards.

This note in particular was written to me because of a story I wrote regarding a new bill in Ohio that will help families of children with down syndrome.

You can find more about it from my story.

Getting thank yous for the things I have done at work, I always feel a little guilty. I don’t feel I deserve them because the truth is it’s not me but the platform I have that is helping the individual or organization. TV’s powerful platform was something that attracted me to becoming an on air reporter. You can tell by this blurb I wrote in the cover letter I used while in search of my first job…

With power comes great responsibility, the responsibility to be truthful, fair, and accurate. As a journalist it is my obligation and privilege to use this power to tell stories in a way that will educate viewers and shed light on issues within the community.

Never the less, the Ohio House Bill 552 was a big enough issue the Down Syndrome Association of Great Cincinnati felt compelled to send gratitude. What are you grateful for? Maybe it’s time to write it down and drop it off in the nearest blue box.
