“The struggle is real.” You’ve either heard this phrase or said it yourself. Out of coffee? “The struggle is real.” Lock your keys in the car? “The struggle is real.” The phrase, more used in jest has truth to it. Struggling IS real. It’s something we all experience, but what those struggles are differ greatly.

I have a friend currently struggling to be less physically active. She loves to workout. Hard to imagine, right? She just loves training, both physically and mentally. However her doctor has asked her to cut her gym time in half. For many people this news from a doctor would have them jumping for joy. For my friend, this recommendation is a challenge.

I am guilty of many a times hearing someone tell me their struggles and not truly listening to them. Instead I make quick judgments, concluding their struggles to be trivial and definitely less difficult then my own struggles.

If we seek to understand, compassion will follow. Don’t spend your time judging other people’s struggles. Let them carry their burdens and be there for them for support. Easier said then done, right? That’s because it’s a struggle to hold back judgment… and that struggle, like so many others, is real.
