Advice on Advice

I just did the math. Since last Monday I have spent 7.7 hours on the phone getting advice from various mentors and friends. That number is NOT including the conversations I have had with Momma Wop, a.k.a. my mother, or the time I have spent reaching out to people via email. Believe it or not, I still have more of those phone calls lined up throughout the rest of this week.

Having guidance in my life both professionally and personally from mentors has proven to be priceless. Mentors bring with them years of experience and expertise that I do not have as a young professional. They can also provide an outside view, which makes it easier for them to think about things logically as they are not dealing with the matter themselves. Thus, they lack emotional ties, which can lead to making irrational decision.

However, at the end of the day, advice is just an opinion and it’s hard to weed out thoe opinions that really aren’t healthy for your development. So how do you heed the helpful stuff and trash the toxic jargon?

Here’s an article that does a great way of breaking it down.
