Let Go

I can’t recall the last time this was my vantage point in a spin class. Since becoming an instructor I am usually in the position of the gal you see in hot pink, a.k.a. in command with all eyes on you. The class I teach at Xavier University was canceled today due to the Easter holiday so I decided to go to the gym and take a class for a change.
Change it was. Leading spinning classes has made me more focused during my workouts. The time goes by faster and I work harder. This afternoon as I sat in the back of the classroom, I found myself frantically looking at the clock (at least three times in the first 15 minutes.) My mind wondered. Then, I gave in.
Instead of fretting, not knowing what was ahead, I let go. I followed. Suddenly I was so zoned in I caught myself singing out loud to the lyrics, of music I was hearing for the first time. (Sorry to the person who was sitting next to me!) I embraced the uncertainty of being a participant rather than the leader of the class.
It’s hard to put your hands up in the air and willing say I will follow you to another. It’s even more difficult if you are accustomed to being the one giving the orders. However if you embrace the role, following can have just as much fulfillment as leading. Besides, there can’t be a leader without those choosing to follow.
